Start with the job, the room, and the household rules. A robot that is excellent at expressive conversation may be useless for monitoring a pet; a mobile camera may be poor at companionship; a developer platform may require more time than the buyer wants to spend.

Name the job before comparing robots.
Home robots currently fall into several overlapping roles. Pick one primary role and, at most, one secondary role. When every feature is a priority, the most expensive robot tends to look best even when it is not the best fit.

Audit the physical environment.
A desktop robot needs a stable surface, power, and enough quiet space for microphones. A wheeled robot needs a floor plan it can survive. Check the home before assuming a navigation feature will handle it.

Write down the first-year cost before checkout. For developer robots, include the value of assembly and setup time. For connected robots, ask what stops working if a subscription or remote service ends.

Offline is a feature-by-feature question.
Base Eilik and Eilik with AI Station should not be treated as the same connected product. Energize Lab describes local recognition processing and remote processing of conversation audio in its robot privacy policy. Adding the station changes what data is involved.
AIBI's English command list makes a useful distinction: starred commands work in offline mode. Turning, checking the battery, and taking a photo are among the marked actions. Chat and weather are not marked. Offline voice operation therefore does not mean the camera stops working, and it does not mean every voice feature remains available.
For EMO, the reviewed command page lists supported actions without an equivalent per-command offline key. If a particular offline task is essential, that remains a question for LivingAI before ordering; an unmarked command list is not evidence that everything works offline or that nothing does.

Step 04 / software
Choose your preferred kind of complexity.
Open-source robots expose more control and remain useful for custom projects, but they require documentation, dependencies, and debugging. Consumer robots hide that complexity behind an app, which is convenient but increases dependence on the manufacturer.
Check supported phones and computers, update history, account requirements, export options, local control, community size, and the process for factory reset or resale.
Step 05 / privacy
Count sensors and people, not promises.
A moving camera can see more of a home than a fixed camera. Microphones can capture bystanders who never installed the app. AI features may introduce additional providers beyond the robot manufacturer.
- Which features work locally, and which send audio, video, images, or prompts to a service?
- Who can access the robot, and is there a guest or activity log?
- Where are recordings stored, for how long, and how are they deleted?
- Can camera and microphone be disabled clearly and verified?
- What household rooms, hours, and situations are off limits?

Step 06 / ownership
Plan for year two, not just day one.
Robots combine mechanical wear, batteries, firmware, apps, accounts, and cloud services. That makes support quality unusually important.
- Warranty length and who pays return shipping
- Replacement tracks, motors, batteries, cables, and docks
- Firmware update process and recent support activity
- Whether core features work when the internet is unavailable
- Data deletion, factory reset, transfer, and end-of-life policy
Worked examples / returns
A return window is not automatically a trial period.
LivingAI's posted policy allows return applications within 14 days of delivery, with unused condition and original packaging required. Customer-initiated returns carry return-shipping costs. This matters if your plan is to use a robot for two weeks and then decide whether to keep it.
Energize Lab lists a 14-day refund window outside Asia and seven days in Asia, with unused-condition requirements. Its separate warranty policy specifies 90 days for manufacturing defects. A warranty claim and a change-of-mind return are different processes; keep the packaging and order record while confirming the terms for your seller and region.

Build a shortlist around your main constraint.
Use the trade-off that matters most to eliminate unsuitable products before comparing optional features. These examples are recommendations about fit, not ratings of long-term reliability.
- Small desk and a lower hardware budget: start with base Eilik if stationary touch interaction is enough. It is not a substitute for a voice-and-camera robot.
- Walking desk pet with automatic charging: compare EMO Go Home as the full package, rather than budgeting only for standard EMO.
- Portable companion with some offline voice actions: inspect AIBI's starred command list against the tasks you need; it does not provide room-to-room mobility.
- A robot to program: start with a developer platform such as Reachy Mini and budget for the required host computer or wireless configuration. Packaged consumer behaviors do not imply an open programming interface.
Your first-year budget is the hardware subtotal plus checkout charges, any services you actually select, and a reserve for parts. We do not assign zero to costs that the reviewed listing does not establish.
