01 / The opportunity
Why might someone buy this?
A fitted holder might let an owner lift, clean and replace the station in the same position without retaping the floor. Its convenience and grip must outperform the free stock setup and cheap tape before a product is justified.
Who might need it?
- Initial audience: EBO Air 2S owners who can show the original dock moving on a hard or low-pile floor during the final charging approach.
- Owners whose dock stays fixed, whose robot cannot locate the station, or who have electrical contact or adapter faults are outside the proposed first scope. Other Enabot dock sizes are unverified.
The Air 2S depends on reaching its charging station. One December 2025 review says the stock dock grip collected dust, the station sometimes moved during docking, and thin carpet tape was needed to hold it.
Two May 2026 accounts describe missed docking, including a robot that reached the area in front of the station. They are useful evidence that docking frustration still exists, but they do not identify physical shifting; software navigation or placement could explain them.
02 / Existing solutions
How owners handle it today.
| Current solution | What it does | What remains |
|---|---|---|
| Original dock against a wall ↗ | The manufacturer recommends wall-backed placement with clear space at the sides and front, giving the robot an unobstructed approach. | Wall placement may not stop lateral sliding or restore dirty floor grip. It should be tested before adding any accessory. |
| Use the supplied grip pads ↗ | The original pads aim to hold the station at floor level without adding an approach edge. | One owner reported dust building up and grip becoming inadequate. Cleaning the pads is a sensible first check, but its effect was not documented in that account. |
| Thin carpet tape — one DIY example found ↗ | The December reviewer says the tape held their moving station in place. | A removable holder would have to show an advantage in repositioning and cleaning; tape residue or cleaning trouble were not measured or reported in this example. |
What a better product would need to do
- Measure the actual Air 2S dock, power cable and approach geometry before claiming model fit; keep the original charger and contacts unobstructed.
- Retain the manufacturer's wall position, 0.6 m side clearances and 2.0 m front clearance; prevent lateral and rear movement without introducing a track-catching front lip.
- Use removable floor-safe grip that can be cleaned and replaced; check hard floor, low-pile carpet, pets and cable tension separately.
- Beat cleaned stock pads and inexpensive tape on demonstrated movement control and practical cleanup, or abandon the accessory.
03 / Research evidence
How strong is the evidence?
Opportunity type: Observed physical workaround for a specific owner problem
A 2025-12-19 owner review reports stock grip pads collecting dust, the station moving and a carpet-tape fix. Two separate 2026-05-06 marketplace entries report missed docking but do not identify station movement. A positive 2026-01-05 review says automatic return works. Syndicated copies of the tape story count once; purchase verification and prevalence are unknown.
An Air 2S owner review dated 2025-12-19 describes the original dock shifting and a thin carpet-tape fix. Two May 2026 marketplace entries describe failed returns to the charging station without diagnosing dock movement. The Air 2S manual asks owners to place the station against a wall and leave 0.6 m clear on each side and 2.0 m in front. Enabot sells a $29.99 replacement powered dock.
Keeping a station from shifting could help the subset of charging failures where movement occurs during the final approach. A removable registered tray may make repeated placement and cleaning easier than tape. Neither improvement has been measured.
How common physical dock movement is, whether the May misses involved movement, stock-grip performance after cleaning, dock dimensions and revisions, floor compatibility, approach interference, benefit over tape, willingness to pay and achievable unit economics.

Checked: A powered replacement is different from a passive stabilizer; price and availability can change. One 2025-12-19 syndicated marketplace review documents physical shifting and tape. Two independent-looking entries dated 2026-05-06 describe missed charging without establishing the physical cause. A 2026-01-05 positive return-to-dock review is counterevidence to any universal claim. Review counts or retailer listings cannot estimate accessory demand.
Search interestA focused current search found the official $29.99 replacement dock and generic tape/nonslip alternatives, but no dedicated Air 2S passive anchor in the checked official accessory catalog. This is not an exhaustive competitor search. No reproducible Google Trends comparison or sourced query-volume number was available on 2026-10-03.
04 / Product design
How the product could work.
- A thin shaped recess would register the original powered Air 2S station without covering the robot's target, contacts or charging indicator. A rear stop would meet the wall and a cable notch would avoid tugging on the station.
- A replaceable silicone or TPE grip layer would sit below a rigid PETG or HDPE tray. Its front approach would need to be flush or beveled so the robot's tracks do not encounter a new step.
- The owner would keep Enabot's charger, adapter and software. DockHold would address only physical movement seen during the final approach; it would not locate or drive the robot.
Directions worth considering
Die-cut high-friction pad
Benefit: Thin, simple and inexpensive to prototype beneath the existing station.
Tradeoff: May be no better than generic nonslip material or the stock pads after cleaning.
DockHold registered tray
Benefit: Could locate the dock repeatably, manage cable exit and use a replaceable grippy underside.
Tradeoff: Fit is model-specific and a raised front edge could make the robot's approach worse. No benefit has been measured.
Wall-backed bracket
Benefit: Could hold the station against a stable reference without relying solely on floor friction.
Tradeoff: Wall adhesion or drilling adds installation and renter issues and still needs exact floor-to-dock alignment.
Our recommendation: Prototype the registered tray for the original EBO Air 2S dock, with a very thin front edge. Compare it directly with clean stock pads, a generic nonslip layer and the documented carpet-tape workaround. Do not turn generic missed-dock reports into a promise that this passive holder fixes navigation.
Build the first version
One passive, removable floor tray sized for a measured EBO Air 2S dock, with a rear stop, cable exit, replaceable high-friction underside and a flush or beveled front approach. No electronics, dock-contact cover, robot modification or compatibility claim for other stations.
Materials and production options
- Prototype: a PETG print or laser-cut HDPE outline, with a replaceable silicone/TPE underside and a shallow rear cable notch. Material contact with wood, vinyl, tile and carpet needs testing.
- Possible production: thermoforming or injection molding for the rigid tray and die-cut grip sheets after dock geometry, revision fit and demand are demonstrated. No process has been quoted or chosen.
Prototype checks
- Measure a real Air 2S dock, its rear cable exit, underside pads, power plug, charge contacts and robot approach path. Record any dock variants rather than assuming the Air 2 or Air 2 Plus station fits.
- Build two low-profile tray variants and one simple grip-only baseline. Compare stock, cleaned stock, carpet tape, generic nonslip material and the trays on the same hard floor and low-pile carpet.
- For repeated supervised approaches from fixed start positions, record dock displacement, track interference, successful charge initiation, ease of lifting and replacing, cable pull and any floor marking. Stop if the tray worsens approach or damages a surface.
05 / Business assumptions
Could this support a business?
This is a narrow possible accessory, not a validated business. Tape and cleaning may solve the problem well enough, and many docking complaints may be software or placement issues. A $19 target is only an owner question; production, returns and support costs are unquoted.
Price to test
$19 USD for a fitted removable tray is an unvalidated question for owners who have seen the dock move. The $29.99 official powered replacement dock is only a different-product price reference; cheap tape may set the real willingness-to-pay ceiling.
Costs still to verify
No material, tooling, grip, packaging, shipping, floor-damage, return or support quote exists. Profitability cannot be inferred from the tray's small size or the proposed $19 price.
Where the first customers might come from
An owner-facing HomeRobotHQ troubleshooting guide could explain why an Air 2S misses its dock, including station shift, blocked approaches, power and navigation. Only owners who observe physical movement should see DockHold as a potential fix. Search traffic and conversion are not measured.
06 / Next experiment
What should a builder test first?
The first decisive test: On a real Air 2S and original dock, compare measured dock displacement and successful charge initiation using the stock setup, cleaned grip, thin carpet tape and two tray variants. Test hard floor and low-pile carpet under supervised repeated approaches.
Next validation steps
- Recruit owners who can show the dock shifting, inspect their floor and document what happened before suggesting a product. Separately classify owners with software, recognition, contact or power issues.
- Measure repeated supervised docking with stock pads, cleaned pads, carpet tape, generic nonslip material and two DockHold prototypes, recording displacement and whether charging starts.
- Only after a measurable advantage, show actual size, floor-compatibility limits and the $19 question to eligible owners. Treat waitlist joins as stated interest, not sales.
What would make us drop this idea?
- A cleaned stock station or thin carpet tape performs as well as DockHold in repeated real-hardware trials.
- The tray worsens docking, catches the tracks, tilts contacts, pulls the cable or marks common floor finishes.
- Owners with missed charges cannot demonstrate station movement, leaving too small an eligible audience.
- Affected owners decline a $19 holder after seeing the working tape and cleaning alternatives.
Practical risks to check before going further
- The added tray edge could catch the small tracks or change the final charge-contact angle.
- A floor grip that holds on one surface may slip, leave marks or collect pet hair on another.
- Cable tension or a pet could shift the whole holder unless the layout is safe and the power lead is managed.
- The moving-dock subset may be much smaller than the broader population complaining of docking misses.
- Free placement changes, cleaning or inexpensive tape may be equally effective and simpler to buy.
