Start by naming the failure. A Loona that never searches for the dock has a different problem from one that sees it, reverses at an angle, reaches the contacts without charging, or charges normally but will not leave. The sequence below avoids treating every symptom as the same docking fault.
Step 01 / classify
Identify which part of docking is failing.
Watch one complete attempt without moving Loona or the station. Record the last successful action. This matters because navigation, final alignment, electrical contact, and charging behavior are separate systems.
Do not begin with a factory reset or a homemade dock modification. First establish whether Loona can charge by cable, whether the dock has the specified power supply, and whether the failure repeats from the same starting point.
| Observed failure | What is already working | Test next |
|---|---|---|
| Does not search for the dock | Unknown | App settings, current software, command or schedule, and starting state |
| Finds dock but misses or stops | Recognition and part of navigation | Surface, approach lane, lighting, obstacles, and repeatability |
| Sits on dock but does not charge | Navigation and alignment may be working | Adapter, cable, dock power, dry contacts, and direct-cable baseline |
| Charges but will not leave or interact | Docking and charging | Battery threshold, quiet hours, leave-dock setting, and expected charging behavior |
Write down the firmware and app versions with the test date. Loona's behavior and settings can change through updates, so an older owner workaround may no longer describe the current app.
Step 02 / power baseline
Prove that Loona and the power supply can charge normally.
The current Loona Blue manual specifies a 5V/3A USB charger, sold separately, and says a full charge from zero takes about 2.5 hours under that condition. Loona Korea's FAQ also calls for 5V/3A at the charging dock and advises against a fast-charging adapter. Check the label on the actual adapter rather than assuming a phone brick supplies the required mode.
Run a direct-cable charging test using the instructions for your exact Loona version. If direct charging also fails, the problem is broader than dock placement. If direct charging works but the powered dock does not, you have narrowed the investigation to the dock path, cable, adapter, contacts, or station.
The manual says fine dust or debris on Loona or the charging station should be wiped gently with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use metal tools, liquids, improvised electrical contacts, or an adapter whose output you cannot verify.
- Read the adapter's output label and confirm 5V/3A support for the relevant port.
- Inspect the cable and connectors for visible damage before using them.
- Test direct charging separately from automatic docking.
- Clean only with the robot powered down and according to the manual.
- Stop and contact support if the robot, dock, plug, or cable becomes excessively hot.

Step 03 / dock placement
Give the dock a controlled approach lane.
Place the station on a stable surface and remove nearby objects before testing. Loona Korea specifically warns that objects around the charging dock can prevent recognition. Keep the dock position fixed between trials so you are not asking the robot to solve a new geometry each time.
Use normal, even room lighting. The Loona Blue manual says the camera may not function properly in direct sunlight and identifies reflective or transparent objects, black objects, thin furniture legs, and small objects as difficult to detect. That does not prove any one of them causes a docking failure, but each is a defensible variable to remove from the test area.
Photograph the dock and mark its position with removable tape. Start Loona from the same direction and distance for three attempts. Record whether it sees the station, lines up, rotates, reverses, touches the base, and begins charging.
“My Loona recognises her charging port but never goes to it.”

Step 04 / surface test
Compare carpet with a hard, level surface.
Owners have reported Loona misaligning or missing the station on longer carpet, while other owners report successful docking in their own environments. These observations do not establish a universal carpet limitation. They do justify an A/B test.
Keep the adapter, lighting, starting position, and command the same. Run three attempts on the current surface, then move the entire dock setup to a hard, level surface and run three more. If alignment improves consistently, surface movement or wheel behavior is a plausible cause. If nothing changes, do not buy a mat based on the carpet hypothesis alone.
A future dock mat should be tested as a system, not selected because it feels grippy. It must remain flat, avoid blocking the station or contacts, protect the approach geometry, and work with Loona's turn and reverse movement without becoming a new detectable edge or obstacle.
“If she is on a carpet that is too long, she might misjudge and partially or altogether miss her dock.”
This comparison can validate a product opportunity. It cannot yet validate a universal Loona dock mat. That would require repeated testing across carpet types, dock versions, firmware versions, and multiple robots.

Step 05 / automation
Check auto-return, leave-dock, and quiet-hour behavior separately.
Loona Korea documents an automatic return threshold that can be configured in the app, a voice command to return to the charging dock, an optional setting for leaving after reaching full charge, and a quiet period during which Loona stays inactive. The names and locations of these controls may differ by app version and region.
A robot that remains on the charger may be behaving according to its charge threshold or quiet schedule rather than failing to recognize speech. Likewise, an active game or interaction may delay an automatic return. Review one automation at a time and retest after confirming that the robot and app are current.
Do not assume that a successfully saved path or schedule guarantees physical docking. A 2026 owner report describes docking becoming worse after setting an auto-charge path. That is one report, not a general result, but it is another reason to preserve a simple baseline and change only one setting per test.
“I tried mapping her path back in the auto charge function, and now, she can't find it, can't back in.”

Step 06 / controlled test
Run the ten-minute dock test.
Use this sequence after confirming safe power and current software. Stop as soon as a damaged component, unusual heat, smell, sound, or electrical problem appears.
- Record app version, robot version, dock type, adapter output, floor type, and room lighting.
- Confirm direct charging works, then power the dock with the verified adapter and cable.
- Clear the dock area and remove reflective, transparent, black, thin, or small objects from the approach.
- Start Loona from the same position and run three docking attempts.
- Change one variable, such as surface or lighting, then repeat three attempts.
- Save a short video showing the entire approach and the charging indication.
The useful result is not 'it still fails.' Record whether the failure occurs during search, approach, rotation, reverse alignment, contact, charging confirmation, or departure.
Step 07 / escalation
Send support a reproducible failure, not a general complaint.
Contact KEYi support when the correct power setup and controlled environment do not resolve a repeatable failure, or immediately when there is damage, excessive heat, a battery concern, or an electrical fault. Do not continue repeated docking attempts if the robot is striking the station or furniture.
Include the order and serial details requested by support, robot and app versions, dock and adapter labels, the exact failure category, the number of repeated attempts, and one continuous video from start to failure. State whether direct charging works. This gives support a narrower hardware or software question to investigate.
KEYi's official Reddit account said in July 2026 that the company was reviewing historical bugs and support requests. Owners in the same thread continued to request full-home mapping and better automatic return to the dock. That exchange confirms an active request, not a promised feature or fix date.

What we know / limitations
The problem is real; its prevalence is unknown.
Multiple owners across several years describe dock discovery, alignment, contact, and automation problems. Other owners in the same discussions report successful docking, including in lower light or after updates. Reddit threads are self-selected support conversations and cannot tell us what percentage of Loona robots fail to dock.
The official materials establish power requirements, charging precautions, configurable behavior, and environmental factors that can affect visual detection. They do not provide a universal dock clearance measurement or prove that a specific mat, light, calibration, or location will fix every unit.
HomeRobotHQ will split this page only if Search Console shows distinct demand for a subproblem, such as carpet alignment or a powered dock that does not charge. Until then, keeping the failure modes together prevents several thin pages from repeating the same evidence.
